“Ask what they watered at Salt Wells, and somebody will wink.”
Dusty Gritts keeps a place southeast of what used to be the Salt Wells watering hole. Whether the old stop served more horses or more cowboys depends on who is telling the story. Dusty lets both versions stand.
He is home long enough to mend a fence, check on his neighbors, and load the truck again. A calf is waiting at the next roping, and Dusty still believes he can catch it. The miles between home and that arena are where most of his life happens.

Another town, another try
Dusty has pulled into arenas before sunrise and driven out after the lights went dark. At every stop he watches the calves, checks his rope, and thinks he has finally found the timing. Some days the loop lands. Other days the calf is halfway across the pen before Dusty has finished his thought.
He can laugh at a bad run without pretending he wanted one. He asks what he missed, practices it when nobody is watching, and shows up ready to try again. That stubborn little bit of hope is what keeps the truck pointed toward the next town.

The miles in between
On the road, Dusty remembers people before he remembers placings. He knows which family has a new baby, which rancher is getting back on his feet, and who could use somebody to listen over a cup of coffee.
Once, with his own run coming up, he found a family trying to trace a dead trailer light in the parking lot. Dusty slid under the trailer in his good shirt and stayed until the lights came on. When somebody asked why he risked missing his turn, he said they had a longer drive home than he did.
He is still chasing that calf. He will stop for you on the way.
The stories he brings back
When Dusty gets a microphone, the road comes with him: the small towns, the generous strangers, the friends who tell him the truth, and the calf that refuses to cooperate. He makes himself the punch line. Nobody in the crowd has to be the butt of the joke.
After a show, somebody usually comes up to tell Dusty a story of their own. He listens, laughs, and remembers it the next time he passes through. Then he heads home toward Salt Wells for a spell, until the next roping gives him another reason to go.
