Southeast of Salt Wells
Home is where the road starts.
“Ask what they watered at Salt Wells, and somebody will wink.”
Dusty Gritts keeps a place southeast of what used to be the Salt Wells watering hole. Whether the old stop served more horses or more cowboys depends on who is telling the story. Dusty lets both versions stand.
He is home long enough to mend a fence, check on his neighbors, and load the truck again. A calf is waiting at the next roping, and Dusty still believes he can catch it. The miles between home and that arena are where most of his life happens.
